LENS DESIGNS
SINGLE VISION
Single-vision lenses are all-purpose lenses to correct astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. These lenses can also be used in applications such as reading glasses, distance-only glasses, etc., where only one focal point is being corrected by the lenses. Single-vision lenses are available in all lens materials.
BIFOCALS
Bifocal lenses correct two focal points within the same lens. These lenses are primarily used for patients who are experiencing difficulty focusing up close. Traditional bifocals have a line dividing the two focal points within the lens.
TRIFOCALS
Much like bifocals, trifocals are designed with lines segmenting the focal points; however, these lenses possess three focal points (for distance, intermediate, and near vision).
PROGRESSIVE ADDITION LENSES (PALs)
Also known as “no-line bifocals” or “progressive multifocals,” PALs are designed with several focal points within the lens to create a smooth transition from the distance focus to the near. The gradual change in power from the top of the lens to the bottom provides a seamless, fluid power change for various tasks and visual demands. Progressive addition lenses are emerging as the premier lens option for the 40+ generation due to the improvements in lens design and wider fields of vision. Also, progressive lenses are now able to fit into virtually any frame size and shape.
